Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

‘Anybody who believes in Almighty God and the Last Day, should serve his neighbour generously.’

What is the Purpose of Life?

What is the purpose of life? This question has been asked many times in various forms. Many great thinkers in history have come up with different theories. But why should we even care about this question, or even think about it?

I would suggest that this is one of the most important questions you could ask yourself, and you should most definitely care. You also need to have courage and an open mind to discover the answer, so I ask you for the moment, to please put aside any preconceived opinions. At the end of this, the decision is yours, to agree or disagree.

So why should you care?

Can you think of anything in this world that does not serve some purpose? Everything in nature or created by man is there for a purpose. No inventor invents anything without first having a reason for creating it. So how can one of the most complex creations in existence on this earth not have a purpose? I am of course talking about human beings. If we do not try to find out the purpose of our existence, how do we know for certain what our final destination is? Many people would say that the final destination is death, you live your life as best as you can, and then you die. The religious amongst us might say you go to Heaven. But how do we know that?

Let’s take a look at how the majority of us spend our lives on this earth.

If we break things down it all seems to come back to money. Whether it’s just to survive or to get nice possessions, we seem to spend most of our lives working. Working to pay for the kids, buy a house, pay for a few luxuries or saving for old age. We spend our younger years trying to study to get the qualifications, to be able to get a good job so we can save for all these things. If we make it to retirement age, hopefully we still have our health, and have saved enough to be able to have a few years of relaxation before the inevitable call from beyond. Is that it? Is our purpose simply to earn enough money to survive?
